Motors run the parts of a commercial or industrial building that make money — pumps, compressors, conveyors, packaging and production machinery. When a motor won't start or a drive trips every cycle, the problem is electrical until proven otherwise, and it needs to be diagnosed as a system: the branch circuit, the starter or drive, the control wiring and the motor itself.

The scope boundary is stated up front: proprietary drive programming, process-control logic and advanced commissioning belong to the manufacturer or a qualified controls specialist. Motor branch circuits, feeders and VFDs

A three-phase motor circuit is more than a breaker and a wire: conductors and overcurrent protection are sized from the nameplate, and the starting method — across-the-line, soft start or drive — decides what protection and control the circuit needs. Across-the-line installations include the starter or contactor, overload relay, control transformer and pilot devices; everything is installed for the environment it lives in.

VFDs have wiring requirements that differ from ordinary motor circuits and the manufacturer's instructions govern — line-side and load-side conductors, grounding provisions, and shielded cable or power/control separation where required. We troubleshoot the electrical side of drive problems (power quality, phase loss, damaged conductors, control-wiring faults); when a fault points into programming, that work goes to the manufacturer or your controls specialist after we've verified the wiring feeding the drive.

Control power, interlocks and diagnosis

Industrial equipment often runs on a chain of conditions — permissives, interlocks between machines, remote enable signals and safety interfaces — wired exactly as the manufacturer's drawings show. We terminate that wiring and coordinate the handoff points with the controls integrator's panel, but we don't redesign proprietary control schemes or write process logic; disagreements between drawings and equipment get documented and sent back to the manufacturer.

Common symptoms — a motor that won't start, chattering starters, nuisance trips, a pump running backward after service, phase loss — get diagnosed by measuring through the chain: supply voltage and phase balance, current on all three legs, overload settings against the nameplate, and control voltage through the interlock chain.

Startup support and honest boundaries

Before energizing we verify phase rotation, confirm voltage and current under load, and check control and interlock functions against the drawings. During manufacturer startup we support the electrical side while parameter verification stays with the specialist responsible for the equipment.

The boundaries, stated plainly: we do not provide PLC programming, proprietary controls redesign, process-control engineering or manufacturer-certified commissioning. Those stay with the manufacturer or your controls professional, and we coordinate so the electrical side is never the reason a startup slips.
